Commercial Buildings Designed by Vincent Proby

In the first years of his career, Vincent Proby served as project manager for many major buildings in the Los Angeles area; among which were the Los Angeles Sports Arena and the Las Vegas Airport, eventually founding his own firm. He designed many projects in the state of California, including several buildings for the Los Angeles Unified School District, several buildings on the UCLA campus, and Los Angeles City College, Pierce College, and Scripps Institute. His projects also included banks, libraries, museums, medical buildings, churches, mortuaries, private residences, children’s centers, shopping centers, and military buildings. 


California African American Museum


The museum’s permanent collection houses 4,000 objects that span landscape painting and portraiture, modern and contemporary art, historical objects and print materials, and mixed-media artworks. Though the collection emphasizes objects pertinent to California and the American West, it also houses a growing collection of artworks from the African diaspora as well as important works by African Americans from across the United States.



Its creation was an early and tangible recognition by the State of California of the critically important role African Americans have played in the American West’s cultural, economic, and political development.

Vincent J. Proby, Architech 1928-1987 Vincent Proby, Architect, Los Angeles, CA, c. 1985. Proby was one of a small number of African-American architects working in Los Angeles, CA, during the 1980s. He  was born in Wichita, Texas in 1928.  As a child, he moved with his family to Los Angeles and remained in the area for the rest of his life.   Proby majored in architecture at the University of Southern California and designed many prominent buildings during the course of his career.   Commercial Buildings His works include buildings on the campuses of UCLA, Los Angeles City College, and Pierce College as well as several Los Angeles high schools, and structures at Camp Pendelton.
